Dr Philippa Wheble MBChB, BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, DRCOG, MRCGP, MSc (Distinction) Performing Arts Medicine and Certified Transformational Breath Facilitator and Workshop Leader. She works as a General Practitioner within NHS Scotland and with Edinburgh Breathes delivering Transformational Breath® in one-to-one sessions, breathing circles, workshops, weekend retreats and personal development seminar training.
Pippa is an accomplished violinist, viola player and singer with experience of performance anxiety, She hopes to develop a consultation service for performing arts professionals in Edinburgh and take Transformational Breath® workshops into music colleges, healthcare and the corporate setting as a technique for personal development and resilience. She is driven to generate a strong scientific basis to support the introduction of Breathwork into the mainstream. In 2016 she undertook an MSc in Performing Arts Medicine and completed her research thesis entitled 'An exploration of Transformational Breath® for anxiety management in professional voice users'. She gathered physiological, psychological and qualitative data from 36 Transformational Breath® sessions demonstrating significant reductions in anxiety, depression, blood pressure and heart rate and significant improvements in wellbeing. She presented this research at the International Symposium for Performance Science in September 2017.
She is keen to further her research in Transformational Breath® and to extend our understanding of all the conscious-connected breathing schools in terms of what each technique involves, the physiological mechanisms at play and the physiological and psychological benefits of each technique. She joined the IBF Science and Research Group in 2016 and contributed to two pilot research projects undertaken at the GIC in Austria 2017 exploring:
- Breathing Physiology in Transformational Breath: Carbon dioxide and heart rate variability.
- The Scope of Breathwork: describing the Breathwork practices that the IBF represents.
Nominated to the Executive Team in 2017 Pippa hopes to continue facilitating the dialogue between Breathwork and the mainstream. She is passionate about supporting the work of the project groups as they represent the IBF in many international forums. She hopes to develop a structure for these groups that encourages collaboration and communication between the project groups, executive team, integrity committee and the IBF community.
